Orthotics

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are shoe inserts that are designed to aid in correcting abnormal walking patterns, offload pressures, increase efficiency and potentially boost performance. There are many types of orthotics that come in different styles, colours, shapes and sizes. All these different designs cater to different needs. An over-the-counter orthotic would be different than a custom-made orthotic.

Why get orthotics?

Orthotics are able to remove or redistribute pressure and stress from painful areas in the foot and ankle. Orthotics put your feet in a better position in the shoe which can impact your overall movement in a positive way. Over time these small changes can make a huge impact in the ability to walk comfortably. People don't often realize the impact that their poor walking posture can have. These bad habits in your walking pattern can lead to problems down the road, such as bone, circulation, and/or joint issues like arthritis. If untreated it can also lead to increased risks in falls and injury. If you see callus formation on your feet that could also indicate poor biomechanical function which orthotics can help with.

Where do I get orthotics?

Although over the counter orthotics work, they may not be customized and modified to a specific person's biomechanical needs. This is why it is recommended to get custom made orthotics. These are prescribed shoe inserts from registered chiropodists/podiatrists or family physicians. If you are interested in getting a pair of custom made orthotics or have questions regarding custom made orthotics. Feel free to book an appointment with us for a biomechanical assessment. We have a registered chiropodist on staff to perform full foot functional assessments to determine where your deficiencies are. Physiotherapists and Chiropractors are also trained to assess foot mechanics and offer strategies on biomechanical efficiencies as well as provide injury prevention or management techniques.
