Compression Socks

What are they?

Compression socks are specialized socks designed to gently squeeze your legs and feet to help blood flow more efficiently through your veins. They are tighter at the ankle and gradually looser toward the calf or thigh. This “graduated compression” encourages blood to move upward toward the heart, reducing strain on your veins.

Why wear compression socks?

1

Improve Circulation

The gentle pressure helps push blood upward, making it easier for your body to circulate oxygen rich blood to your muscles.

2

Support Your Veins

Compression socks provide external support so your veins can function more effectively, especially if the vein walls or valves are weak.

3

Reduce Swelling

By preventing blood and fluid from pooling in the lower legs, they can help reduce swelling in the feet and ankles.

4

Relieve Discomfort

They ease tired, heavy, or achy legs, which is common in people who stand or sit for long periods.

Choosing the right compression socks

Compression socks come in various strengths, lengths, styles, and colours. Compression strength is measured in mmHg (millimetres of mercury) and ranges from mild to medical-grade levels.

Common Compression Levels

Mild (15–20 mmHg)

Medium (20–30 mmHg)

High (30–40+ mmHg)

Great for everyday use, sports recovery, frequent travellers, or anyone experiencing tired or mildly swollen legs.

Provides stronger support and is often recommended for managing varicose veins, moderate swelling, or mild medical conditions.

Medical-grade compression. These often require a doctor’s prescription and should be used under professional supervision.

Still unsure?

Over-the-counter compression socks are available at pharmacies and general retailers, while medical-grade options may require a doctor’s prescription.
